‘Ik ben een regelaar, wil orde scheppen’

Annie Hsieh uit Taiwan volgde de Fontys-minor International Business Management in Venlo. Op haar ‘thuiseiland’ begon ze zeer recent aan haar eerste baan.

Annie Hsieh from Taiwan took the Fontys minor in International Business Management in Venlo. On her ‘home island’ she very recently started her first job. (English version continues below article in Dutch.)

Wat doe je op een werkdag?
“Ik ben HRM-medewerker bij een startup. Ons bedrijf ontwikkelt kunstmatige intelligentie voor het geven van taaltrainingen Chinees. Dan moet je denken aan taalrobots en spraakalgoritmes, die een cursist helpen bij het aanleren van de taal. Eerlijk gezegd moet ik me deze materie nog iets beter eigen maken. Dit is pas mijn tweede week hier.

Concreet houd ik me bijvoorbeeld bezig met werving en selectie van nieuw personeel. Ik schrijf vacatureteksten en probeer ook zelf via verschillende netwerken ‒ zoals detacheerders ‒ geschikte kandidaten te vinden voor ons functieaanbod. Uiteindelijk voer ik ook sollicitatiegesprekken met hen. Uiteraard komt hierbij de nodige administratie kijken. Een andere taak op administratief gebied is de inroostering van onze parttimers. Ik regel dan wie inzetbaar is, en waar en wanneer dat gebeurt.

Ten slotte heb ik nog enkele marketingtaken. Bijvoorbeeld als het gaat om externe events die we organiseren voor personeelswerving en bedrijfspresentatie. Ik maak dan aankondigingen, bijvoorbeeld voor sociale media.”

Hoe ging de overgang studie/werk?
“Volgens mij wel soepel. Mijn vijf maanden bij Fontys verliepen precies volgens plan, en toen ik in januari 2020 terugkwam op de universiteit van Tainan had ik nog een jaar de tijd om in alle rust mijn master af te maken. Dat is gelukt, net als het vinden van een eerste baan. Geen hobbels dus …

De afgelopen weken ervaar ik wel als tamelijk hectisch. Voor mijn werk moest ik verhuizen naar de hoofdstad Taipei, en door allerlei omstandigheden ging dat pas in het weekend voordat ik hier op maandag 24 mei begon. Flink aanpoten, ook gezien de afstand (265 kilometer, red.).

Daarbij komt dat de coronasituatie in Taipei een stuk slechter is geworden. Na een stabiele periode neemt het aantal besmettingen opnieuw toe. Dat is ook de reden waarom ik hier op kantoor en op de foto’s die ik voor jullie heb gemaakt een mondkapje draag.”

Wat heb je gemist in de minor?
“Niets. Het programma was inhoudelijk op niveau en ik werd vaak getriggerd. Ik vond bijvoorbeeld de vergadertechnieken interessant - de manier waarop Nederlanders elkaar met de voornaam aanspreken is een stuk informeler dan bij ons.”

“Verder heb ik mijn Engels flink kunnen opschroeven. In de twintig weken die deze minor duurt, schiet je niveau echt omhoog.

Na ruim een jaar kijk ik met veel plezier terug op mijn tijd bij Fontys. Nederlanders zijn vriendelijk en sterk internationaal georiënteerd. Misschien komt dat omdat Venlo een grensstad is, maar ook elders viel het me op dat er met een open blik op je wordt gereageerd. Je bent voor de meeste Nederlanders absoluut geen vreemdeling.

Ik kwam steeds in een warm bad. Daarbij werd ik wel een beetje verliefd op Venlo. Ik heb het idee dat veel Nederlanders niet beseffen hoe charmant die stad is.”

Wat maakt dit werk voor jou interessant?
“Ik krijg met allerlei verschillende mensen te maken. Mensen met diverse opleidingen en functies, maar evengoed met compleet verschillende persoonlijkheden. Ik vind dat leuk om te ontdekken en ervaren. Bovendien kun je medewerkers soms echt helpen bij het oplossen van een vraagstuk of probleem waar ze tegenaan lopen.

Daarnaast heb ik er zelf veel plezier in om zaken te regelen en managen. Dingen in goede banen leiden, een klein beetje orde scheppen in de chaos, dat geeft me zelfvertrouwen én het gevoel dat ik echt iets heb bereikt.”

Tevreden?
“Zeker. Hoewel ik hier dus nog maar kort zit, heb ik het gevoel dat deze baan bij mij past. Ik merk dat ik er voldoening van krijg. Ik ben echt niet te voorbarig als ik zeg dat ik mezelf dit wel een hele tijd zie doen.” [Frank van den Nieuwenhuijzen]

What do you do on a working day?
"I am an HRM specialist at a startup. Our company develops artificial intelligence for providing Chinese language training. You have to think about language robots and speech algorithms, which help a student learn the language. To be honest, I still need to master this material a little better. This is only my second week here.

In concrete terms, I am involved in the recruitment and selection of new personnel, for example. I write job advertisements and also try to find suitable candidates for our jobs through various networks - such as secondment agencies. Ultimately, I also conduct job interviews with them. Of course this involves the necessary administration.

Another administrative task is the scheduling of our part-timers. I arrange who can be deployed, and where and when.

Finally, I have some marketing tasks. For example, when it comes to external events that we organize for staff recruitment and company presentation. I then make announcements, for example for social media."

How did the transition study/work turn out for you?
"In my opinion, quite smoothly. My five months at Fontys went exactly according to plan, and when I returned to Tainan University in January 2020, I had another year to quietly finish my masters degree. That worked out, as did finding a first job. So no bumps in the road ...

I do experience the past few weeks as rather hectic. For my work I had to move to the capital Taipei, and due to all sorts of circumstances that only happened in the weekend before I started here on Monday, May 24. A lot of hard work, also considering the distance (265 kilometers, ed.).

In addition, the corona situation in Taipei has worsened considerably. After a stable period, the number of infections is rising again. That is also the reason why I am wearing a mouth mask here in the office and in the photos I took for you."

What did you miss in the minor?
"Nothing. The program was level in content and I was often triggered. For example, I found the meeting techniques interesting - the way the Dutch address each other by first name is a lot more informal than with us."

"Furthermore, I was able to brush up on my English quite a bit. In the twenty weeks that this minor lasts, your level really shoots up.

After more than a year, I look back on my time at Fontys with great pleasure. The Dutch are friendly and very internationally oriented. Maybe it's because Venlo is a border city, but also elsewhere I noticed that people react to you with an open mind. You are definitely not a stranger to most Dutch people.

I always came into a warm bath. In the process, I did fall in love with Venlo a bit. I feel that many Dutch people don't realize how charming that city is."

What makes this work interesting for you?
"I get to deal with all kinds of different people. People with various educations and functions, but also with completely different personalities. I find that fun to discover and experience. Moreover, sometimes you can really help employees to solve an issue or problem they are facing.

In addition, I personally enjoy arranging and managing things. Getting things on the right track, creating a little order out of chaos, that gives me self-confidence and the feeling that I have really achieved something."

Satisfied?
"Definitely. Although I've only been here a short time, I have the feeling that this job suits me. I notice that I get satisfaction from it. I'm really not being too presumptuous when I say that I can see myself doing this for quite some time." [Frank van den Nieuwenhuijzen]
